Decatur County Unclaimed Property Types

Many types of assets can become unclaimed property for Decatur County residents. The most common include wages and commissions that were never collected, savings or checking accounts with no activity for three or more years, stock dividends and brokerage account balances, life insurance policy proceeds that could not be delivered, customer deposits and refunds, certificates of deposit, and safe deposit box contents.

Under IC 32-34-1-19, the dormancy period before an asset is presumed abandoned depends on its type. Most bank accounts are presumed abandoned after three years of no activity. Once reported to the state, the property is available for the rightful owner to claim at any time. There is no deadline. The state never takes ownership of these funds in the sense that it keeps them; the money waits indefinitely for the real owner to step forward.

Note: Businesses based in Decatur County are required to report unclaimed property annually to the Indiana Attorney General.
