What Indiana Unclaimed Money Includes

Indiana law at IC 32-34-1-1 defines unclaimed property broadly. It covers any financial asset that has had no owner contact for a set period. The list of property types that end up in the system is longer than most people expect. This is why searches so often turn up results for people who had no idea they had anything waiting.

Common property types held for Johnson County residents include dormant checking and savings accounts, uncashed paychecks and commissions, insurance policy proceeds, stock dividends and underlying shares, customer refunds and deposits, money orders, and contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes. Under IC 32-34-1-19, most of these become presumed abandoned after three to five years of no activity. Banks must report dormant accounts after five years. Insurance companies report after three years of no contact.

Once a holder reports property, the state posts it to the public database and holds it without any time limit. There is no deadline on claiming your funds. Whether the account was reported last year or twenty years ago, you can still file a claim and get your money back.

Note: Johnson County's growing population means more people have former employers, banks, or insurers who may have reported funds under a Johnson County address.

Filing Your Indiana Unclaimed Money Claim

After you find an account on the state site, the claim process is straightforward. Click the "Claim It" button on the record. Fill in your name, address, and contact info. The site will tell you what supporting documents you need to prove ownership. For most personal accounts, a copy of your government-issued ID is enough.

If you are claiming funds that belonged to someone who has died, you will need more. A death certificate is required. You will also need to show your legal right to claim the property, such as being a named heir, beneficiary, or executor of the estate. The state is careful about this. It wants to make sure funds go to the right person, especially when amounts are large at indianaunclaimed.gov.

Approved claims are paid by check or direct deposit. The state aims to process straightforward claims within a few weeks. More involved claims take longer. If you have questions at any point, call 1-866-462-5246 or email updmail@atg.in.gov. The office is run by the Indiana Attorney General under the Unclaimed Property Division director Amy T. Hendrix.

Indiana Unclaimed Property Law Overview

The legal framework for Indiana's unclaimed money program comes from IC 32-34, the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act as adopted in Indiana. This law sets the rules for every part of the process: what property must be reported, when it must be reported, how the state holds it, and how owners can claim it back.

Under IC 32-34-1-26, every holder of unclaimed property in Indiana must file an annual report by November 1. That report lists each piece of property and its last known owner. At the same time, the holder sends the funds to the Attorney General. Johnson County businesses, banks, and other entities are all subject to this requirement. Failure to report carries financial penalties under the same statute.

The state holds property under IC 32-34-1-30 in trust for the original owner or their heirs. The state can use the money while it holds it, but it must pay the full amount to anyone who proves a valid claim. This trust relationship means your money is safe with the state and will be there when you come to get it.
